We’re coming into Spring, which means new fresh produce to liven up your meals. I’m sure you’re looking forward to the stone fruit and the avocados, but have you thought about expanding your horizons to flowers? Although some may be a little bland in flavour, they will definitely give a little extra something to your meals and desserts!
We have created a list of the best flowers to start growing in your veggie patch that you should definitely try this Spring!
Hibiscus Flowers
The Hibiscus flowers produce large, beautiful blossoms that can come in red, white, yellow and various shades of pink. This flower is often found in teas, relish, jam or salads, but can be a decorative (and edible!) cake topper to really add a special something to your creation.
Lavender
Not only does Lavender have calming properties, it is often used in foods like baked goods, infused syrups, liqueurs and of course herbal teas. It does have quite an overpowering flavour, so it’s important to always start out with a small amount in cooking – a little goes a long way!
Squash Blossom
Did you know that the blossom is just as edible as the squash itself? Zucchini flowers are one of the most popular of the squash family, and can be eaten raw as a garnish or chopped and added to salads. Such a versatile flower, making it great to add to any dish!
Pansy
Such a pretty, and tasty, flower! Their small blossoms come in many different colours including blue, purple, and yellow. Their taste is mild and fresh, making them a perfect decoration on cakes and pastries. They can even be added to a salad when slightly chopped, for a pop of colour.
Rose
There are so many different types of roses, all different sizes and colours, and ALL are edible! The petals are used in things like granola (when dried) or even in salads for colour and texture.
Liven up your palate and plate this Spring, and start bringing in those beautiful blooms to deck out your next dish! Your friends and family will be impressed, and you’ll make your food even more Instagram-able!
