Celeries come in long, straight stalks with green leaves at the top. It is an easy snack that can be paired with cheese and peanut butter. Their distinctive flavour becomes the hallmark flavour for many dishes such as soups and casseroles.

Health Benefits

Celery is an excellent source of antioxidants and enzymes that help improve blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and prevent heart disease. It is also loaded with essential minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin C, vitamin B-6, vitamin K, potassium, and folate. 100g of celery offers the following:

  • Vitamin A – 10% of DV
  • Vitamin C – 6% of DV
  • Vitamin K – 40% of DV
  • Vitamin B-6 – 4% of DV
  • Folate – 10% of DV
  • Potassium – 8% of DV

Selecting tips

  • Look for celeries with firm stalks with medium-thick ribs that are crisp enough to break apart easily
  • If the stalks still have leaves attached to them, look for brightly coloured leaves that are not wilting
  • Avoid leaves with brown or yellow spots, as they indicate that the celery is a bit older
