Though many people think that macadamia comes from Hawaii, macadamia is actually a tree nut native to Australia, originating from the coastal rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. Macadamia nuts are popular as snacks both on its own and when used in cookies and cakes. Macadamia nuts begin to be harvested in early March, with its peak months being late May and June.

Health Benefits

Macadamia nuts help reduce cholesterol and are a rich source of vitamin A, iron and protein. Macadamia nuts contribute to a heart-healthy diet, but since they are high in fat, other fatty foods should be substituted for it. 100g of macadamia contains the following:

  • Vitamin C – 2% of DV
  • Calcium – 8% of DV
  • Iron – 20% of DV
  • Vitamin B-6 – 15% of DV
  • Magnesium – 32% of DV
  • Potassium – 10% of DV

Selecting tips

  • In terms of freshness, vacuum sealed containers of macadamia nuts are best
  • Shelled macadamia nuts have a very high fat content and must be carefully stored to avoid rancidity
  • The nuts should be light in colour
