Owner Don Meers sources all his fresh fruit and vegetables from the Brisbane Produce Market because he believes it’s the freshest and best quality produce available, and he likes to source his products from local growers whenever he can. Meers says “I choose what my customers want” to stock his stores – that means asparagus, Asian greens, pineapples and dragon fruit in spring; peaches, plums, passionfruit and corn in summer; rhubarb, zucchini, cabbage, beans, avocados and berries in autumn, and mandarins, strawberries, leeks, fennel and apples in winter. Customers also love the store’s ‘multi-buy bargains,’ which offer steep discounts on seasonal produce like Asian greens and locally-grown dragon fruit and pineapples, and which Meers often designs to encourage shoppers to try something new along with the better-known fruits and vegetables he sells. Q Growers is also unique in that it has a very popular juice bar inside the store, offering a wide range of healthy and delicious choices including pure juices, smoothies and yoghurt blends. Both are part of Meers’ passion for encouraging healthy choices in his customers, particularly choosing fruits and vegetables that support local farmers and in turn, the local economy – “I encourage customers to eat what is in season and encourage them to drink natural juices,” he says.
