Sam and Carmel Fichera and their sons, Sam Jr and Vince, have been serving up a fresh variety of produce with a distinctly Italian flair since they opened Rode Fresh in 2005. The store specialises in a variety of fruit and vegetables and deli items, including everything you’d ever need for the perfect antipasto plate. The owners listen to their customers to always provide everyday essentials and also purchase more of what’s in season to ensure they’re always offering the freshest fruit and vegetables at the most affordable price, too. That means you can expect to find staples like apples, oranges and bananas in store pretty much year-round, but every season brings new fruits and vegetables into rotation at Rode Fresh. In spring, the store stocks up on asparagus, avocados, melons, passionfruit and pineapple. Plums, peaches, cherries and mangoes are always popular in summer, while autumn brings watermelon, chard, rhubarb, Asian greens, zucchini, turnips, spinach and macadamia nuts. In the winter, mandarins, strawberries, papayas, sweet potatoes and eggplant are at their best (and most affordable) – while the Queensland locals are always happy to see the return of tropical favourites passionfruit and pineapple as a sign that spring is once again around the corner! Of course, the Ficheras aren’t just passionate about produce – they also bring their passion for authentic Italian food into the store every day; drop in on one of their taste-testing days to try a new recipe, or if you’re really lucky, you might even get an authentic Italian meal suggestion from Carmel, who loves to share her favourite recipes with customers. They’re so popular that Rode Fresh has even printed some up in the form of recipe cards – make sure to pick some up next time you visit!
