Second Ave Grocer is a family-owned delicatessen and food store specialising in fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, Italian meats and antipasti, fresh produce and continental groceries in the heart of Altona North. Our story starts way back in 1949, when our father, Onofrio Palamara, arrived in Melbourne from a small farming village in southern Italy at age 17 and opened Palamara Fruit Supply in Bridge Road, Richmond. Onofrio built his business on a passion for fresh seasonal produce, family and the flavours of his homeland, values he passed on to his four children.
We wanted to expand his vision beyond fruit and vegetables and create a delicatessen and grocery for the quality foods that brought our family together around the dinner table every evening. In 1990, we opened our own store on a quiet street in Altona North. Today, Second Ave Grocer (formerly (Altona Fresh) is a marketplace for fresh seasonal produce, rare cheeses and hand-sliced meats, specialty pantry items, plus plenty of inspiration for your next meal. Food is our family’s passion, and we’re honoured to share it with yours.
Phil is the man behind our fruit & vegetable section. He has been visiting the Melbourne Market since he was 15 years old, so he knows what he is looking for. Phil samples before he buys to ensure what we sell at Second Ave Grocer is premium. You will often hear Phil singing from his side of the shop letting customers know what is the pick of the day. Customers love it and regulars join in giving the store a market ambiance.
