Also known as a “lady’s fingers”, the okra originated in Africa. The most common types of okra include Annie Oakley, Purple, Chinese and Emerald. Okra seeds can be used to make a hot brewed drink similar to coffee. Okra is typically available and in season during winter.

Selecting tips
- Look for pods that are bright in colour
- Avoid soft, dull, bruised or blemished pods
- The pods should be no more than 4 inches long
- Okra that is too ripe will have a very sticky texture
