Rambutan is a tropical fruit and is marked by its signature bold red colour and bristly spines. Its sweet and floral flavour make rambutans ideal for eating raw as a snack or stewed as dessert. A ripened rambutan can range from bright red to bright yellow-orange.
Health Benefits
The antioxidants found in rambutans can flush out toxins and keep your immune system healthy. They can also help prevent cancer, inflammation, and heart disease. 100g of rambutans contains:
- Vitamin C – 8% of DV
- Iron – 2% of DV
- Calcium – 2% of DV
- Magnesium – 1% of DV
Selecting tips
- Look for fresh rambutans that are bright red or yellow; the more vivid the colour, the better
- Make sure the spines are firm; the shrivelling of the spines indicate deterioration
- Avoid rambutans with bruises as they are signs of being overripe or damaged
