Shiitake mushrooms range in colours from amber to paper bag-brown. Each mushroom has a wide umbrella shape with caps and a curled rim. Shiitake mushrooms are said to have 10 times more flavour than white button mushrooms. Its smoky flavour and rich texture make shiitake mushrooms good to stir fry and sauté. Shiitake mushrooms are available and in season all year round.

  • Vitamin A – 47% of DV
  • Vitamin C – 25% of DV
  • Calcium – 16% of DV
  • Iron – 8% of DV

Selecting tips

  • Avoid packaged mushrooms where possible – select mushrooms from a loose pile where it is easier to examine the quality of the mushrooms
  • Pre-sliced mushrooms are usually lower grade mushrooms
  • Thick caps give the mushrooms a more substantial bite
