A Better Choice For Freshness

Warm-up with some delightful Autumn fruit and vegetables to keep your body fuelled in these cooler months. As the nights get longer and colder, there’s nothing more comforting than cooking up a warm meal to feed the family. By knowing what’s in season, you can make the best choice for affordable and excellent quality produce to feed your family.

This week, weather events in Queensland may impact prices and the availability of some produce lines. You will still be able to find excellent quality fruit and vegetable at your local store from growers around the country.

Our pick of the week this week is Quince! Nothing says Autumn quite like Quince, which has a delicate vanilla flavour and adds something special to your recipes! Quince can be used in savoury cooking, and it truly shines in sweets, too. Some options for cooking include poaching, baking in pies or pastries, or you could try your hand at making your very own Quince Paste for your grazing boards this weekend! Try some this week at your local Fruit and Veg shop!

Persimmons are in excellent supply and the quality is great this week. Custard Apples are also plentiful and are a delightful treat after dinner, or as a sweet snack throughout the day. Be sure to try some this week at your local Fruit and Veg shop.

Citrus season is upon us, and we couldn’t be happier to see Mandarins, new season Navel Oranges, Grapefruit, Pomelo and even Yuzu available this week. Pick up some citrus this week to delight your tastebuds and give your immune system a much-needed boost as we head into cooler weather!

Apples and Pears are in excellent supply in several varieties as new-season fruit continues to roll onto the shelves of your local Fruit and Veg shop so be sure to pick some up this week.

There is a good supply of melons available this week, including Watermelon, Rockmelon and Candy Melon, which are all great snacks to remind us of warmer weather! Taking the kids down to the oval this weekend? Pack some melons for a snack that is hydrating and will help maintain their energy throughout the day.

Have you ever had an Eggfruit? Eggfruit, or Canistel, is a medium-sized yellow fruit, similar in size to a pear, with some large seeds inside. This special fruit is only in season for a very short amount of time. It can be harder to find, but if you’re wanting to try out a new fruit, this is worth it! The flavour is often compared to a slightly sweet hard-boiled egg with a similar texture too! Ask your grocer if they have any available if you’re wanting to find something a bit different this week.

Kiwifruit season is here, with several varieties available. You will find green and gold varieties available in excellent quality, as well as some red varieties available. Papaya is also in excellent supply, and is a great way to boost your vitamin A and vitamin C intake. Try making this Papaya Relish to surprise your guests this weekend.

One of our favourite underrated vegetables is back in good supply this week. Celeriac is a large root vegetable that can be cooked similar to Potatoes. It has an earthy taste and is a great option if you want to switch up your meals this week! Try roasting or mashing to add a distinctive parsley-celery like flavour to meals.

Leafy vegetables like Radicchio, Cabbage and Kale are all in excellent supply this week. Radicchio can be chopped and eaten raw in salads, grilled in wedges, or cooked in dishes like soups, risotto, and pasta. To prepare radicchio, trim or remove the outer leaves and wash the head under cool water before using. Try some out this week!

Carrots are an excellent option to include in your weekly shop. They are an excellent source of fibre, vitamin A, biotin, vitamin K1, potassium, and vitamin B6. Carrots are a great option for several reasons, they’re an excellent snack to eat with dips, or add to salads or roast dinners. You could even make a Carrot Dip for a tasty snack!

Autumn means there are several varieties of specialty Mushrooms available. Choose from a selection of button, portobello, shiitkake, maitake, oyster, enoki, and special pine mushrooms. There are plenty to choose from, each with their own unique flavours and textures. Ask your grocer about their Mushroom selection to get the best variety for you!
