Now that we’re spending a lot more time indoors, it can be very easy to get into the habit of eating, purely out of boredom! It’s also incredibly easy to fall into the trap of eating for comfort – we are in the middle of a pandemic after all! Here at A Better Choice, we are all about food! But it’s important to establish a healthy relationship with food and to avoid using the act of eating as a coping mechanism.
Here are our top tips to combat boredom eating!
- Ask yourself, “How hungry am I?”
If you are genuinely ravenous, eat away! But if you’re only slightly hungry, and only just finished lunch 30 minutes ago, you’re probably just eating out of boredom. Instead, pour yourself a glass of water, make yourself a cup of tea, or have a healthy snack like an apple!
- Develop a food alternative
If you’re not actually hungry, and more so just feel like eating for the fun of it, it’s important to develop a change of plan. Think about other things you could be doing instead of eating at that point in time. It could be going for a quick walk, giving a friend a call, changing up your working position (head to the couch from the desk) or even reading a chapter of your favourite book.
- Make sure you’re eating enough at breakfast, lunch and dinner
Ensuring you’re eating enough for your three main meals will help keep those pesky cravings at bay! This will leave you feeling satisfied for longer, which will help minimise those snacking moments.
- If you’re snacking, make sure the snacks are good!
We understand that sometimes it is just a case of the munchies! When this happens, opt for snacks that are high in fibre as these will keep you fuller for longer. Think veggies and dip, or a piece of fruit.
Do you think these tips will help you the next time you find yourself eating out of boredom? We hope so!
