The common fig tree is well known for its sweet fruit. The fig fruit ranges from a bright green to deep purple exterior, with the inner flesh being a bright red. Figs are thought to have originated in the Middle East, but are now grown throughout the temperate world – including Australia.

Selecting tips

  • An old fig will have a sour smell. Choose sweet smelling figs.
  • Make sure they’re soft, and they give a little when pressed.
