This week brings the last week of Autumn, and it’s well and truly time to bring out the fuzzy socks and blankets! The change in season is always an exciting time at your local Fruit and Veg shop, as available produce changes and we have more options for exciting meals to cook! There is an abundance of fresh, excellent quality produce available at your local Fruit and Veg shop, so be sure to head in and add something different to your trolley this week!
Our pick of the week this week is Papaya. With the weather cooling down, Papaya is an excellent option to help boost your immunity, with 103% of your daily intake of Vitamin C, as well as Vitamin A. If you’re not entirely sure what you could do with Papaya, a few options are to eat alone as a tasty snack, blend into smoothies or juices, slice and add to salads, or if you’ve got a sweet tooth, you could try Baked Papaya for a dessert the whole family will love.
Pineapples are in good supply and of excellent quality this week. No matter which side of the pineapple on pizza debate you’re on, there’s no doubt that Pineapple is a fruit with so many possibilities! For a quick and easy dinner this week, try our Pineapple and Chicken Stir Fry!
Hass Avocados are into their new season now, so you will find both Shepard and Hass varieties available at your local Fruit and Veg shop this week. Avocado is the perfect addition to your cold-weather salads. Slice and toss into your favourite salad combinations, like our Citrus, Fennel and Avocado Salad!
If you’re looking for something new at your local Fruit and Veg shop this week, keep an eye out for Starfruit (or Carambola)! Starfruit is a fun way to get the kids to eat a wider variety of fruit. As the name suggests, this fruit looks like a star when sliced! The taste is similar to an apple, with crisp juicy flesh and waxy green skin.
Melons are all in excellent quality this week, with a great selection of Watermelon, Rockmelon and Candy melons all available this week.
New-in season this week are Chokos. Belonging to the gourd family, they are medium sized green fruit with a similar taste to squash or zucchini. They are a great addition to stir-frys, or a tasty side-dish simply sauteed with onion, garlic and butter. Pick some up this week and try them out!
One of our favourite winter veggies is Beetroot, a nutrient-rich option for the colder months. If you’re entertaining on a budget this week, we recommend trying this Roast Carrot, Beetroot and Lentil Salad for a nourishing dish that is so simple to make!
Leafy vegetables such as Radicchio and Cabbage are great quality this week. Try our Salmon with Cabbage, Pecans and Bacon for a hearty meal this week.
Eggplant is perfect for the cooler months, with a delicious earthy flavour that goes so well in a variety of dishes. One of the simplest ways to enjoy Eggplant is simply to roast and mash into a dip for a warming dip to share. Our Oven Roased Eggplant, Pomegranate and Pecan Dip is a surefire way to please the family.
