Mushrooms come in countless varieties, the best-known of which include Portobello and Shiitake mushrooms. While they’re often used to soak up flavours when cooking, they actually hold a lot of flavour of their own. They are an easy, delicious addition to any meal.

Health Benefits

Fresh mushrooms are full of nutrients and antioxidants while being low in calories and cholesterol. They help to strengthen the immune system and consist of low-energy to help with weight management but still leaving you full after a meal. 100g of white mushroom contains the following:

  • Vitamin D – 1% of DV
  • Vitamin C – 3% of DV
  • Iron – 2% of DV
  • Vitamin B-6 – 5% of DV
  • Magnesium – 2% of DV

Selecting tips

  • Pick mushrooms with a firm, fresh and smooth appearance, and a dry yet plump surface
  • A closed veil mushroom cap indicates a more delicate flavour, while mushrooms with exposed gills would have a richer flavour
  • Avoid broken or bruised mushrooms. Any dirt on the surface can be washed off
