In season during spring, you can recognise pomegranates by their round shape, hard yellow and red outer skin, and their clusters of edible red seeds. Its seeds can be used as dessert toppings, and its pulp can be pressed to make a juice. This juice can be used to make jellies, salad dressings, and syrups.

Besides being rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, pomegranates can also protect the heart and arteries, help with cancer prevention, and improve fertility. 100g of pomegranate seeds contains:

  • Vitamin C – 17% of DV
  • Calcium – 1% of DV
  • Vitamin K – 36% of DV
  • Folate – 16% of DV
  • Potassium – 12% of DV

Magnesium – 3% of DV

Selecting tips

  • Select heavier pomegranates to ensure that the seeds have the most juice
  • Avoid pomegranates with heavy bruising and cracks in the rind
  • Select pomegranates with a glossy, deep coloured rind for the best flavour
