A Better Choice For Freshness

It’s important to stay healthy during the cooler months of the year. While you might be craving warm comforting meals on cold nights, it doesn’t mean they have to be lacking in nutrition! Your local Fruit and Veg shop is full to the brim of excellent quality fresh and seasonal produce to keep you creative in the kitchen!

Our pick of the week this week is Broccoli, a superfood that is low in calories and high in nutritional value, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B-6 as well as Protein and dietary fiber. When selecting Broccoli, look for firm stalks with a bright green head and compact clusters of florets and fresh leaves. Broccoli has the shortest life of any vegetable, so to make sure it lasts well at home before consuming, keep it refrigerated below 4°C. Custard Apples are in their peak season now, so be sure to pick some up this week! They’re a great snack option, and larger fruit are great for sharing.

Avocados are in good supply, as Sheppard avocados come into late-season, Hass Avocados are back in season. If you’re after healthy comfort food this week, make the family Pumpkin, Beef & Black Bean Chilli with Avocado Salsa. 

Grapes are in great supply with plenty of varieties available at your local Fruit and Veg shop. Grapes are a great option for lunchboxes, or to take to work during the day for a quick and easy snack!

Have you tried this season’s Quince yet? We think you should! They’re in season now, and available at your local Fruit and Veg shop. They’re a delightful Autumn fruit that can be used in a variety of ways, similar to Apple and Pear. Cook them up this week for an indulgent Autumn treat!

Pears are plentiful, with plenty of new-season varieties available including beurre bosc brown pears, packham pears, and nashi pears all excellent quality. Treat yourself to some baking this weekend and whip up this Pear and Chocolate Upside Down Cake for the family or your next dinner party for an easy dessert to impress your guests.

Great quality citrus is in season, including tasty Mandarins and navel Oranges coming into season in Australia. You may find Buddhas Hand available at your local Fruit and Veg shop, too! This interesting fruit is one of the most ancient fruit of the citrus family. It is made up of rind, with no pulp and can be candied and made into citrus sweets. Don’t be shy to pick some up if you see some!

Chestnuts are in excellent supply and are perfect for an afternoon snack on a cold day. Pick some up this week and try them out!

Brussels Sprouts are coming back in season, and are an excellent source of your daily vitamin C and vitamin A, as well as a great source of iron and magnesium. When selecting, look for vibrant green sprouts that are firm with tightly packed leaves. The smaller the brussels sprout is, the sweeter it will be. For a nice warming side dish, try out this Brussels Sprout Gratin, we’re sure it’ll win the kids over.

Pick up some tasty Asian greens at your local Fruit and Veg shop this week for your next stir-fry! Try Bok Choy,  and Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli) for nutrient-packed veg that packs in plenty of nutrients to keep your body healthy!
