Most fresh mangoes are eaten around the world every day than any other fruit. They vary in colour, with some vividly coloured red and yellow and some in dull green. Mangoes are distinctive with their juicy and sweet-spicy flavour. Mangoes are in season beginning from August and September in the Northern Territory and wraps up in Southern states at around March or April.

 

Health Benefits

Mangoes contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, making it a superfood. Mangoes are sodium free, fat free and cholesterol free. Mangoes are beneficial to digestion and are a good snack to take on the go after a workout to replace lost potassium. 100g of mangoes contains the following:

  • Vitamin C – 60% of DV
  • Vitamin A – 21% of DV
  • Vitamin B-6 – 5% of DV
  • Potassium – 4% of Dv
  • Magnesium – 2% of DV

 

Selecting tips

  • Squeeze the mango – the mango is ripe if there is a slight give
  • Ripe mangoes will sometimes have a fruity aroma at their stem ends
  • Mangoes are softer as they ripen
